Here is the view out our apartment tonight. Hong Kong people are protesting (see previous post for details) by forming a human chain along many of the MTR (subway) lines and elsewhere around the city.
The crowd in the following video is chanting:
• “Stand with Hong Kong”
• “Fight for freedom”
• “Don’t give up”
• “We want our five asks”
Timothy is sleeping through this just fine since his window faces the side of the building, but Naomi is up watching and asking lots of good questions. We have no worries about our safety. These have been remarkably peaceful protests given the number of people involved and the length of time they have continued to go on.
Other places around Hong Kong
The following are not right outside our window, but show how far reaching and how many people are involved in the protest tonight.
Many Christians are gathering on Hong Kong Island. The left picture is from our apartment and the building on the top right of the photo (white zig-zag lights) is where the gathering is occurring. The video on the right shows a glimpse of them there. It is great to see religious freedom allowing them to gather together as a group joining in with the larger protest for freedom.
Lion Rock is a well known area in Hong Kong that overlooks the city. The lights in the right photo are all the people lining the path to the top.

Thank you for posting this. I am glad all is peaceful and that you feel safe. The Christian gathering is amazing as is the people lined up on Lion Rock. Let’s pray that the Chinese government will allow the protests to remain peaceful.

Tonight I watched the CBS news regarding the recent protests in Central and Tsuen Wan, HK on Sunday. The protests involved violences between protesters and riot polices. It seems that the news didn’t mention about the (28 miles?) human chain in a peaceful protest in HK.
Business insider (8/23/2019) resonated HK human chain as the Baltic Chain for freedom and Independence from the Soviet Union in August 1989. Although both human chains have some similarities, I think that it will be a long battle for HK people to fight for their freedom without violating the Basic Law, a legal system in HK.
Since the independence from the British government in 1997, the Chinese authorities have promised to exercise “One Country and Two Systems” in HK for 50 years. However, this policy has being challenged throughout the past years. I can’t imagine how the political situation will be in HK in a long run. This uncertainty may cause worries, fear and anxiety in the society.
Kyle, I like your photos in this post. I miss HK. I wonder how I act if I were in HK now.
I think that family education is important in this stage of political unrest. HK needs good and assertive leaders in the fields of politics and human right. I am glad that some HK Christians stood up for the human chain and voiced their opinions in a peaceful way.
I do pray for you, your family, and HK people. I pray that peace talks continue among relevant parties. I pray that HK economy will restore and the division will be reduced in the society. Amen.
